This medal was conferred upon individuals in recognition of non-operational service in a severe climate or involving special hardship.

There were 6 bars, inscribed in Hindi, that could be awarded with this medal for the following campaigns:

a) Jammu and Kashmir
b) NEFA
c) Himalaya
d) Bengal-Assam
e) Andaman and Nicobar
f) Marusthal

The reverse Hindi inscription reads as "Sainya Seva Medal".
