History
This medal was conferred by the Republic of Vietnam upon Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, Aspirants, Chiefs of State, and Enlisted Men for courageous service during the Vietnam War. This medal was often awarded posthumously to American military personnel. It was discontinued in 1973.
The medal had three different versions that coincide with the political change in South Vietnam: the State of Vietnam, the First Republic, and the Second Republic.
To receive this award, recipients must have either performed heroic actions, served for at least 13 years or been wounded during battle.
