Physical Description
A white enameled six-pointed star with rays in the quadrants between the points, the obverse bears a medallion of green enamel with a map of Vietnam and red enamel flames, the reverse bears the inscription VIETNAM encompassed by a border inscribed with CHIEN DICH BOI TINH, on a green and white striped ribbon.
History
This medal was conferred upon Vietnamese military personnel in recognition of at least 6 months of service in major Vietnamese military operations from March 8, 1949 to July 20, 1954, and January 1, 1960 to a date that was never determined due to the end of the South Vietnam Government.
This medal was also awarded to foreign military personnel that directly supported Vietnamese actions.
This ribbon may be decorated with a silver coloured banner dated "1949-54", which was primarily awarded to Vietnamese military personnel. It may also be decorated with a silver coloured banner dated "1960-", which was primarily awarded to Allied units.
The reverse translates to "Campaign" and "Medal".
