This Title was founded by Presidium of the Great National Assembly, and it was conferred upon Bulgarians and foreigners in recognition of meritorious service in the defence of Bulgaria and its allies.

Recipients of this Title were given the label “Hero of the Republic of Bulgaria,” and also awarded the Order of Georgi Dimitrov.

They were also awarded an official “wearer" copy of the award that was meant to be used as an everyday wearable decoration. These copies are stamped “R” on the reverse, and they were officially produced by the Bulgarian Mint from Gilt materials.

This Title was last awarded in 1990.

There were approximately 56-58 Gold Stars awarded in total.

The Gold version of the star features the gold mark of the Bulgarian Mint, or the stamp of the master goldsmith that produced the award.
