The Order of Vytautas the Great was established in 1930 in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the death of Vytautas the Great, Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1392-1430. It was suppressed during the Soviet occupation, but it was officially re-instated in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet regime and the declaration of the Republic of Lithuania.
At the time of its creation, the Order was awarded primarily to high-ranking state officials and foreign heads of state. Today, it is conferred upon Lithuanian citizens and foreigners in recognition of meritorious service rendered to the nation and humankind.
The Commander is identical to the Grand Cross Commander, however, only the Grand Cross Commander is worn with a Breast Star. A total of 207 Commanders were awarded in the Republic of Lithuania from 1918-1940.
The Order has not undergone any changes in design, although manufacturers may have changed between periods. It is also listed in the Orders of the Republic of Lithuania (1991-). See also the Medal of Vytautas the Great in the Medals & Decorations of the Republic of Lithuania (1918-1940) and the Republic of Lithuania (1991-) for the medal that was created alongside the Order.
