History

The Merit Cross of Honour was established by King Carol II on June 5, 1931, as an extension of the Order of Merit. It was originally conferred upon individuals in recognition of service to the crown or distinguished achievements in the arts or civil service. It was awarded in the same manner as the higher grades in the Order, but for lesser merits. It was later discontinued following the abolition of the Romanian monarchy in 1947.

From 1937-1941 the I Class Cross could be awarded with swords in recognition of wartime merits. There may be additional versions that vary in size, composition, or manufacturer.

See also the Order of Merit in the Orders of the Kingdom of Romania (1881-1947).
