History

The Commemorative War Cross (1941-1945) was established in 1994 and was awarded to all Romanian veterans of the Second World War. Prior to the creation of this decoration, the situation in Romania surrounding the war had been sensitive. In the immediate aftermath, battles fought prior to 1944 were erased from collective memory. A Soviet medal created in 1949 was the only other decoration that was awarded in connection with the Second World War.
