The Medal of Education Merit was established in 2000 as an extension of the Order of Education Merit. It is awarded to Romanian citizens and foreigners in recognition of meritorious service in the field of education.

There is a limit of 6000 I Class Medals.

The I Class Medal features a reverse inscription that translates to "For Merit in Education."
