The Mihai Eminescu Medal was established by the Republican government in 1999 in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mihai Eminescu. Mihai Eminescu was a Romanian writer, known as the most famous Romanian poet.

Originally, only 200 medals were authorised in 1999, however, 10 additional medals were stuck in in the following year.
