The Order of Diplomatic Merit was established in 2000. It is conferred upon Romanian members of the Foreign Ministry, including those employed in embassies and consulates. It may also be awarded to foreigners who have made significant contributions to the development of relations between Romania and other sovereign states.
Membership in the Grand Officer grade is limited to 50 members.
The Grand Officer Breast Star features an obverse inscription that translates to "Always Faithful to the Country."
