History

The Motherhood Medal was awarded to Romanian mothers in recognition of raising large families. The I Class was conferred upon mothers with 6 children and the II Class was conferred upon mothers with 5 children. It was permanently discontinued following the collapse of the Socialist Republic in 1989.

There are two versions of the I Class Medal. The first features the initials of the Romanian People's Republic and the second features the initials of the Socialist Republic of Romania. Both versions have a reverse inscription that translates to "Motherhood Medal."

See also the Order of Maternal Glory in the Orders of the Romanian People's Republic & Romanian Socialist Republic (1947-1989) for the order that was created alongside this medal.
