History
The Military Order of the Star of Karageorge was instituted on May 28, 1915 to reward Serbian and foreigners NCO's and other ranks in recognition of "exceptional personal bravery and self-sacrifice."
The Order had two classes: Gold and Silver. If the recipient was repeatedly rewarded, twigs of oak and laurel were added to the ribbon each time.
The Order was mainly awarded for service during WWI.
These crosses display the war years on the reverse. It might be found inscription with "1914-15", "1914-16", "1914-17", and "1914-18". However, there are no examples dated 1914-15, and it is unknown if they were actually manufactured.
The low price of these crosses made mass scale production possible. Following the records, the gold grade was awarded to 1074 Serbians, and 37 foreigners, while the silver grade was granted to 1449 Serbians, and 836 foreigners.
