Andorra

Andorra, officially known as the Principality of Andorra, is a landlocked microstate on the Iberian Peninsula, bordered by France to the North and Spain to the South. The capital city is Andorra la Vella. A population of roughly 77,000 inhabit a space of 468 square kilometers of rugged mountains and mixed forests. While the official language is Catalan, several other languages are commonly spoken including French, Spanish and Portuguese. Tourism accounts for nearly 80% of the country’s GDP, allowing roughly 10 million tourists into the country yearly.

Originally believed to have been established by Charlemagne, Andorra was first ruled by the Count of Urgell until 988, and the present charter was formed in 1278. Andorra does not have it’s own military, but rather depends on France and Spain for protection. The country officially declared war on Germany during the First World War, however, other than the several Andorrans who volunteered for the French Legion, the citizens did not directly participate in fighting. Andorra was left out of the Treaty of Versailles, and was technically still at war with Germany until they announced peace in 1958. During the Second World War, Andorra was neutral but was used as an important smuggling route between Vichy France and Spain.

Due to its’ small size and small population, Andorra awards very few decorations. The only order is the Order of Charlemagne founded in 2007, and two medals awarded to city guards.
