    This Medal was founded by Duchess Maria Luisa rendered meritorious service in caring for the sick and other relief efforts, during the Cholera epidemic of 1855-1856.

    It was also awarded to recognize charitable services rendered during other public disasters.

    The reverse inscription translates to "To the courageous charity."
