History
The Cross is conferred upon Italians within military or civilian operations who were permanently injured by an act of terrorism or hostile act abroad. The injury must be equal to, or greater than, 80% of their working capacity.
It is also awarded posthumously to Italians who have been killed in action. If the recipient is deceased, the next of kin will receive the award. If there are no next of kin, the award will be conferred on the municipality in which the recipient resided.
When the Cross is awarded to military personnel the reverse medallion features a five-pointed star.
When the Cross is awarded to civilian personnel the reverse medallion features the letters “RI” for the Italian Republic.
