History

This Medal is associated with the Medal for Civil Valour instituted in 1851 by King Vittorio Emanuele II during the Kingdom of Italy.

The modern Medal was established by regulations passed on January 2, 1958, wherein the royal emblem on the obverse was replaced with the emblem of the Italian Republic.

It is awarded to Italian citizens for serving the public via a variety of acts, including but not limited to averting serious property damage, aiding in the apprehension of criminals, saving the lives of individuals in serious peril, and bringing international esteem to Italy.

The reverse may be engraved with the name, date, and region of the recipient.
