Physical Description


An ovular medal, the obverse bears the image of a soldier wearing Pickelhaube helmet, encompassed by laurel and the inscription AFRICA, the reverse bears an angel, with the coat of arms of Spain, with foliage and the inscription REINANDO ALFONSO XIII, topped with a crown, on a horizontally elongated suspension.

History


The Medal for Africa was established on November 8, 1915 to commemorate civil and military service in Africa in the territories of Ceuta, Larache, Tetuan and Melilla. The medal was awarded on a green ribbon to those who served in Ceuta, Larache and Tetuan, and on a yellow ribbon for those who served in Melilla.
