History
The Carlist Medal for July 18, 1936 was minted in commemoration of the July 18, 1936 coup and the participation of the Requeté in the uprising.
On July 18, 1936, a group of right-wing Spanish military officers in Morocco started a revolt, which spread to mainland Spain. General Francisco Franco broadcasted a message from the Canary Islands calling for all army officers to join in the uprising to overthrow Spain's Republican government. By July 21, the rebels, called the Nationalists, captured Morocco, parts of northern Spain and some cities in the south. However, the Nationalists were not successful in Madrid. The Nationalists then executed suspected political opponents in an attempt to secure their occupied territories. After nearly 4 years of fighting, the Spanish Civil War ended on March 28, 1939 when the Republicans surrendered Madrid. Approximately one million people died during the conflict. Franco served as dictator of Spain until his death in 1975.
