History

The Inquisition Decorations, a.k.a Saint Peter Martyr Decoration, were promoted by King Ferdinand VII in 1815, to be wore by the members of the recently re-instituted Spanish Holy Office, also known as Spanish Inquisition, as a distinction of their labor. The institution was abolished in 1833.

The design and motto of these Decorations were based on the Order of Christ and St. Dominic, orders founded centuries before.

If the recipient was a Clergy, the ribbon was colored red. If the recipient was a secular, the ribbon was black.
