The Cross for the Defense of Madrid was founded in Spain by King Ferdinand VII on June 20, 1817. It was awarded to those who participated in the defense of Madrid against a French invading army in December of 1808.
The Cross features an obverse inscription that translates to "To Courage and Loyalty in Madrid," and reverse inscription that translates to "In the First Days of December of 1808."
