History

The Cross for the Fugitives of Zapadores was founded in Spain by King Ferdinand VII on October 1, 1817. It was conferred upon two companies of engineers which escaped from Alcala de Henares in 1808 and joined up with resisting forces in Valencia against the French army at the Peninsular War.

The Cross features an obverse inscription that translates to "My Loyalty and Courage kept You," and a reverse inscription that translates to "Exit of the Zapadores of Alcala, May 1808."
