The Cross of Merit of Lerin was instituted by the Council of the Regency on July 23, 1811. It was awarded to military personnel, mainly from the Rifle Battalion of Cadiz, who participated in the defense of the town of Lerin against to a French siege on the 25th, 26th, and 27th of October, 1808.
This Cross was conferred only upon Officers, while the soldiers wore an escutcheon.
