History

The Medal for the Surrender of the French Fleet was established in 1808 by the Supreme Junta of the Kingdom of Spain located in Seville, on behalf of Ferdinand VII when he was imprisoned by the French army. It was awarded to Spanish troops led by Juan Jose Ruiz who defeated a French fleet in Spain led by Admiral Rossilly on June 14, 1808.

The Medal was authorized with variation of designs and shapes.

The I Class Medal was awarded to Admirals and Chiefs, while the silver and bronze Medals were awarded to enlisted.

The Medal features an obverse inscription that could be translated to "For the Surrender of the French Fleet on June 14, 1808," and it features a plain reverse.
