Physical Description


A five-pointed star constructed of enamels, the points of the star are in red enamel, the obverse center bears a medallion with a portrait of a soldier with a helmet and the inscription LA REPUBLICA A SUS HEROES, with a green enamel laurel wreath between the points of the star.

History


The Laureate Star of Madrid was the highest military award for gallantry during the Second Spanish Republic. The star could be awarded to individuals and groups in recognition of action to protect Spain and its citizens. Members of the Spanish Republican Armed Forces were eligible for the award.

The Laureate Star of Madrid was named after the capital city of Spain and symbolized courage and defense of the republic, especially during the Siege of Madrid in the Spanish Civil War.
