A medal in the shape of an inverted, rounded triangle, the obverse bears the image of a shirtless man, the reverse bears the image of two men carrying a person on a stretcher with barbed wire in the background, with the inscription SUFRIMIENTOS POR LA PATRIA on a yellow ribbon.
History
The Medal for Martyrs (Sufferers) for the Homeland was created by decree on March 5, 1937. It was an honorary decoration and was awarded to those who were injured (temporarily or permanently), or killed during service to Spain. It could also be awarded to the mother of the deceased.
The ribbon of the award could bear embroidered red "X"s to indicate the number of wounds.
