History

The Civil Order of Environmental Merit (Orden Civil al Mérito Ambiental) was established in Spain by decree of July 29, 2009. It is conferred upon foreign and national citizens, and organization, in recognition of extraordinary efforts to protect and conserve the environment within Spain.

The Order encompasses the protection of natural heritage and biodiversity, combating global warming and climate change, promoting environmental health, and the sustainability of marine and inland water resources.

The grades are Grand Cross, Commander by Number, Commander, Officer, Knight, Bronze Medal.

The Order features an obverse inscription that translates to ”Environmental Merit.”
