    History

Established by King Gustav III, this Medal is conferred in recognition of outstanding contributions to the sciences, society, and culture of Sweden.

During the reign of King Gustav III, this Medal was predominately conferred upon foreigners.

This Medal was first awarded in 1785.

It is awarded by the Government of Sweden to approximately 7 people annually.

This Medal is not conferred in gr ...  ades but rather by size and suspension, following an 18th century scale called “Berch’s Scale”. The highest distinction, or grade an individual can receive is the 18th Size Gold Medal On Chain; other “grades” that are associated with this medal vary in composition, suspension and medal size.

When conferred upon women the Medal is worn on a bow ribbon.

The name of the Medal translates from Latin to English reading "Those Whose Efforts deserved." This Medal may also be known as "Illis Quorum".

The obverse design of the medal consists of the portrait of the reigning monarch, and around his head in Latin, his name and title.

The reverse design of the medal has changed many times over the years of the medal's existence.
