History

This Order was founded by King Frederick I in 1748. It is the highest decoration awarded in Sweden. It is conferred exclusively upon members of the Swedish Royal Family, as well as foreign heads of state.

Since 1975, the Medal has been awarded separately from the Order, although it still belongs to the Order. It is awarded to Swedish citizens for exceptional humanitarian service and general service to Swedish society.

The obverse inscription translates to "Frederick, King of Sweden," and the reverse inscription translates to "It Unites the Peers with the King."
