The medal was founded by Emperor Franz Joseph I in commemoration of the the 50th anniversary of his reign.
It was conferred upon any military or civil personnel within the Empire that had served in law enforcement or the Armed Forces between December 2, 1848-December 2, 1898.
The medal dies were cut by J. Tautenhayn, Junior.
The medal was worn on a red ribbon for Military Division awards, and a half white and half red ribbon for Civil Division awards.
The Gold Medal was conferred for 50 years of service.
Versions of the Gold Medal that are composed of Gold may feature a gold double eagle suspension.
