History
This medal was created by the Ministry of the Interior, following two petitions made by provincial institutions desiring more recognition for the public service done by fire-fighting units. The Medal was instituted on November 24, 1905 by an Imperial Resolution.
This medal was conferred upon Austrians who has served as voluntary members of fire brigades for a minimum of 25 years, and whose service involved meritorious fire fighting activities and life saving.
The medal could also be conferred upon individuals who served in a non-voluntary or professional role within an Austrian Fire Brigade for a minimum of 25 years.
It was worn on a triangular golden yellow ribbon.
The reverse inscription FORTITUDINI VIRTUTI ET PRESERVANTIAE translates to “for diligence, merit and endurance). The roman numerals are 25.
At least 45,000 medals were made at the Central Mint in Vienna.
