History
This medal was instituted by Emperor Franz Joseph I in commemoration of the Tyrolean citizens that defended of Tyrol's borders against the war of 1866.
The 1866 war against Prussia and Italy was fought in Bohemia, Upper Italy and on the Adriatic on the Tyrolean Border. The Tyrolean and Vorarlberger Landsturm was called up, which consisted of roughly 4,000-5,000 men to help defence.
To commemorative the fighting in Tyrol on 17 September 1866, Emperor Franz Joseph I instituted a silver votive medal to all the Landesschutzen and Landsturm who were actively engaged in the defence of the border. It was also awarded to all men who served in the administrative defense. The province of Tyrol was also awarded the medal.
The medal dies were cut by J. Tautenhayn, Senior. The reverse inscription reads MEINEM TREUEN VOLKE VON TIROL 1866 meaning “for my loyal subjects in Tyrol 1866.” It is worn on a white and light red trifold ribbon.
