History

The Medal of Sport Merit was established by Royal Decree on May 23, 1939, and replaced the Medal of Physical Education and Sport. It is awarded to Belgian citizens in recognition of continued service in sport and extraordinary athletic achievements. The annual contingent is composed of 10 Gold Medals, 40 Silver Medals, and 100 Bronze Medals.

The Gold Medal is awarded in recognition of 20 years of service, or to award Olympic Gold Medalists, World Champions, and World Record Holders. The reverse inscription translates to "Remember the Homeland Belgium."
