History
The Political Prisoner Medal (1914-1918) was awarded to Belgian civilians who had been detained, for a minimum of one month, by German forces during the First World War as the result of an act of loyalty or valour. It was also awarded under the same conditions to foreigners who were devoted to the Belgian cause.
There were approximately 18000 Belgian prisoners in the First World War, but only 5000 Medals were awarded to purely “political” prisoners. No Medals were awarded after March 31, 1952.
The obverse inscription translates to "Albert King of the Belgians," and the reverse inscription translates to "In Testimony of National Gratitude." The Medal could be inscribed in French or Dutch depending on the choice of the recipient.
