Established by King Frederick VIII, this Medal was awarded to recognize individuals who were members of the Royal Guard who were at the Amalienborg Palace, on duty, during the hour of King Christian IX's death.
This Medal may also be known as the "King's Guard Medal".
There are two known versions of the obverses and reverses, but many other small variances are known to exist.
