The Medal was instituted on September 10, 1918 by the Finnish Senate. The Medal was awarded for participation in the war to secure Finnish independence from Russia.
The Finnish Name of the Medal is "Vapaussodan muistomitali".
The ribbon of medals awarded to Finnish recipients may be decorated with clasps reading, "ETELÄ-SUOMI", "KARJALAN RINTAMA", "KOUVOLA-KOTKA-HAMINA", "LEMPÄÄLÄ-LAHTI", "PELLINKI", "POHJANMAAN VAPAUTUS", "SATAKUNTA", "SAVO", "TAMPERE", "VIIPURI", "VILPPULA".
The ribbon of medals awarded to Foreign recipients may be decorated with clasps reading, "SYD-FINLAND", "KARELSKA FRONTEN", "KOUVOLA-KOTKA-FREDRIKSHAMN", "LEMPÄÄLÄ-LAHTIS", "PELLINGE", "ÖSTERBOTTENS BEFRIANDE", "SATAKUNTA", "SAVOLAX", "TAMMERFORS", "VIBORG", "FILPULA".
The ribbon may also feature an additional rose design to indicate gallantry.
