History
This Medal was instituted by the Police Department of Paris on December 31, 1789.
The Medal was worn by 300 Colporteurs of Public Notice in order to distinguish them from the 60 Posters of Public Notice.
The obverse inscription translates to "The Law and the King," and the reverse inscription translates to "Publicity is the Safeguard of the People."
Some Medals may have the word “ROI” erased from the obverse and replaced with the word “L’EGALITE.” This change would have come after August 10, 1792. Few would have been altered however, because they were not worn during this period.
The issue number appears in the banner on the reverse.
The Medal for Colporteurs is translated from French "Medaille des Colporteurs de Papiers Publics."
