History

The Escapees Medal was awarded to escaped prisoners of war during the Franco-Prussian War, World War I, and World War II. It was also awarded to those from Alsace-Lorrain who attempted to escape with the intention of joining the French Army. Approximately 15000 Medals were awarded for the First World War and 35000 for the Second World War.

The obverse inscription translates to “French Republic,” and the reverse inscription translates to “Medal for Escapees.”
