History

The Gallic Francisque decoration was created by Marshal Philippe Pétain on May 26, 1941. It was abolished after the Liberation in 1944.

It was awarded to those who had performed actions in accordance with the National Revolution before the outbreak of war, to those who had performed exceptional acts of military or civil service, and to those who showed devotion and service to Pétain since the outbreak of war. It could only be awarded by a council of twelve appopinted personally by Pétain, or by the Pétain himself.

The recipients of the decoration were required to take the following oath: “I make gift of my person to Marshal Pétain like he made gift of his to France. I pledge to serve his disciples and to remain loyal to his person and his work.”

At least 2626 decorations were awarded between 1941 and 1944.
