History

The Medal for Political Deportation and Internment was awarded to those in possession of a Political Deportee or Political Internee Card. The holders of these cards included those who were taken out of France and interned in a prison or concentration camp, those who were imprisoned in Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin or Moselle, and those who were imprisoned in France or French territories for acts towards the cause of the liberation. The Medal was extended to political deportees and internees of the First World War on January 6, 1955. Approximately 60000 Medals were awarded in total.

The ribbon for the Medal for Deported Resisters had blue and white vertical stripes. It was worn with a “1914-1918” nickel silver clasp and a “DÉPORTÉ” nickel silver gilt clasp. The ribbon for the Medal for Interned Resisters had blue and white diagonal stripes. It was worn with a “1914-1918” nickel silver clasp and an “INTERNÉ” nickel silver gilt clasp.

The obverse inscription translates to “French Republic,” and the reverse inscription translates to “Medal of Deportation and Internment 1940-1945.”

There is at least one version of the Medal which varies in composition, and there may be additional versions that vary in size.
