History

The Medal for Scientific Research was established by the decree of October 7, 1937. It was not awarded until much later, in 1954.

It is a prestigious award which recognizes innovative and important research in a variety of disciplines. It is awarded by the National Centre for Scientific Research (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, CNRS).

The Gold Medal is awarded every year for eminent career contributions to a particular field of study. Only one Gold Medal is awarded annually, and under exceptional circumstances, a maximum of two Gold Medals may be awarded annually. The Silver Medal is awarded to 15-17 academics for innovative research that has had an important impact on the international stage. The Bronze Medal is awarded annually to one researcher of each section represented on the National Council. It is awarded for excellent first works by researchers.
