History
The Medal for the National Gendarmerie was established on September 5, 1949. It is awarded to Gendarmes for an exceptional act of service. It may also be awarded posthumously.
Prior to 2004, each citation was represented by a bronze grenade clasp. Since 2004 the citation for which the Medal was awarded has been represented by a ribbon clasp. A bronze star is worn for a brigade or regimental citation, a silver star is worn for a divisional citation, a gilt star is worn for an Army Corps citation, and a bronze palm is worn for a Gendarmerie citation.
The obverse inscription translates to “National Gendarmerie,” and the reverse inscription translates to "Courage, Discipline.”
