History

The Medal of Honour in Madagascar and Dependencies was created on September 17, 1920 by the Governor General of the colony. It was awarded until 1960 when its administration was relinquished to the new independent government.

It was awarded to native workers for long service in the same position, or for the same business or family. The Bronze Medal was awarded for 10 years of service when employed by a European business or family, and 15 years when employed by a native business or family. The Silver Medal was awarded for 15 years of service when employed by a European business or family, and 20 years when employed by a native business or family.

The obverse inscription translates to “French Republic,” and the reverse inscription translates to “Honour and Labour, Madagascar and Dependencies.”
