History

The Order of Artisanal Merit was created on June 11, 1948. It was replaced by the National Order of Merit on December 3, 1963.

The Order was conferred for service in the economic development of artisanal activities, for the development and support of artisanal trades, and for exceptional quality of artisanal works.

Knights had to be at least 40 years of age with 20 years of service in the aforementioned areas. Knights could be promoted to Officer after 8 years, and Officers could be promoted to Commander after 5 years.

The obverse inscription translates to “French Republic 1948,” and the reverse inscription translates to “Artisanal Merit, Labour, Quality.”

There may be additional versions that vary in composition, size, and manufacturer.
