Physical Description

A circular medal constructed of silver. The obverse bears the busts of Duke Alexander Carl and Duchess Friederike, encompassed by by the inscription "ALEX. CARL HERZOG U. FRIEDERIKE HERZOGIN U. MITREGENTIN V. ANHALT". The reverse bears the inscription "FÜR VERDIENST UM KUNST UND WISSENSCHAFT" (for merit in arts and science), encompassed by a border of oak and laurel leaves. On a green ribbon with white stripes.

History

The Medal for Art and Science was established by Duke Alexander Carl and Duchess Friederike in 1856. It was established to reward outstanding achievements in Art and Science. It is closely related to the Medal for Art and Science donated in Anhalt-Köthen in 1854. There are only two known recipients: Caroline Bardua and Albert Türke (class of medal was not specified).
