Physical Description
A rectangular clasp, constructed of bronze gilt. The obverse is pebbled and features a ‘40’ on the left and the right side, with a crowned Hessian coat of arms in the centre. The four corners are slightly enlarged and each feature a smooth dot. Above the clasp is a firefighter helmet above two crossed firefighter axes. Around the clasp spans an oak leaf wreath that’s open at the top and held together by a ribbon at the bottom. The reverse features a pinback. On a ribbon bar, the ribbon with five dark red and four white stripes.
History
The Fire Service Long Service Bar was originally founded by Grand Duke Ludwig IV and was conferred upon voluntary firemen in recognition of long and meritorious service.
The Bar for 40 Year was added as a grade by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig. The institution date is unknown.
