Physical Description
A circular medal with a raised border, constructed of silver. The obverse features the left-facing portrait of the grand ducal couple on a smooth background, with the circular inscription ‘ERNST LUDWIG GROSSHERZOG VICTORIA MELITA GROSSHERZOGIN V. HESSEN’. On the raised border, at the bottom, is the maker mark ‘OERTEL BERLIN - JAUER DIR.’. The reverse is smooth and features a crown above the intertwined monograms ‘EL’ and ‘VM’, with a semi-circular inscription at the bottom reading ‘VERMAEHLT AM 19. APRIL 1894’. On the raised border, at the bottom, are the signatures ‘STARCK SC. E. DELLENBECK FEC.’. On a loop for suspension, on a white ribbon with broad red side stripes.
History
The Wedding Medal, 1894 was established in commemoration of the wedding of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig and Victoria Melita, daughter of the Grand Duke of Sachsen Coburg and Gotha. The medal was conferred upon wedding guests, including high-ranking civil servants and Officers who attended the celebration in Coburg.
