History

The Ölberg Cross was founded by Prince Eitel Friedrich of Prussia, with the approvement of King Wilhelm II, to commemorate the foundation of the Empress Auguste Victoria Foundation (Auguste Victoria Hospital), located on Mount Olive in Jerusalem.

The cross was conferred upon men and women in recognition of exceptional services rendered to the foundation.

The Auguste Victoria Hospital was opened in 1910, and it remains open today.
Ölberg translates to "Mount of Olives".

This is a rare award. It was awarded in April 1910 on the occasion of the inaugration of the Hospices on the Ölberg. One of the first recipients was jeweller Rentrop from Altena, who made the golden altar pieces for the Church of the Redeemer.
