The Military Merit Medal was jointly founded by Duke Bernhard Erich Freund of Saxen-Meiningen, Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg and Saalfeld, and Duke Friedrich of Saxen-Hildburghausen.

It was awarded to recognise bravery and merit in the field during the war against Napoleon.

Before the medal could be officially awarded, a board reviewed the level of bravery, heroism, and self-sacrifice displayed by the possible ...  recipients throughout their military service.

The Gold Medal was awarded to officers.
