History
The Campaign Medal, 1849 was unofficially founded in 1848 by King Wilhelm I and awarded in 1849. The medal was primarily conferred upon military personnel who participated in the suppression of the Baden Revolution of 1848/1849. Around 3,000 soldiers from Württemberg were sent to help suppress the uprising. The medal was also awarded to the members of the Württemberg contingent that was sent to participate in the First Schleswig War.
The obverse of the medal features a laurel wreath with a bow at the bottom. The wreath surrounds a large letter 'W' that is surmounted by a crown. The reverse of the medal features a semi-circular shaped shield with a scalloped top. There is an inward facing lion head on each of the scalloped corners. Two crossed swords are placed behind the shield.
The stamp of the medal was designed by Gottlob August Dietelbach. The 'D' stamp on the medal refers to Dietelbach.
It is estimated that the medal was awarded 33 times.
