History

The Karl-Olga Medal for Merit in the Red Cross was instituted by Queen Olga with the approval of King Karl of Württemberg. It was awarded to the men and women of the Red Cross who rendered exceptional service in the care of sick and wounded soldiers.

The medal was established in celebration of the 25th year of the couple’s rule. As the Protectorate of Württemberg’s Medical Association of the Red Cross, Queen Olga was responsible for the costs of the decoration.

King Karl's successor, King Wilhelm II, amended the medal provisions and incorporated the medal into the Order of Olga as its lowest grade. From 1905 to 1916, the medal was made a prerequisite to membership in the Order of Olga.

The medal was no longer awarded after 1916 and the Charlotte Cross was awarded in its place.
